What is the Esquimalt Ribfest about?
We are all about family, community, volunteers, kids, participation, and fun!
With these ingredients, we put together Esquimalt Ribfest for a weekend of the best ribs in the country, amazing local entertainment, delicious beer and cider from local craft brewers, free kid’s games, local arts and vendors, for guaranteed Family Fun.
Outside operating costs, all proceeds are funneled back into the community through the Esquimalt Firefighters Charitable Foundation. Proceeds go to local charities and school sponsored activities.
- We are community
- We are family
- We are volunteers
To host a fun, family event and raise charitable money for Esquimalt.
In 2013 Penner Briggs contacted family friend Tom Woods about an event he worked on back East during the summer called a “Ribfest”.
Penner with some culinary experience, a strong sense of community, was excited about what these “Ribfests” had done for charities in Eastern Canada and the United States. Tom had never heard of a “Ribfest”, so out of respect for Penner, they had a chat over a coffee.
It is a good bet that cold beer, the world’s best ribs from incredible “Ribbers”, great local music and free admission would be the recipe for an exciting event in Esquimalt.
In partnership with the Esquimalt Firefighter’s Charitable Foundation, Esquimalt Ribfest has netted over $120,000 for local charities and close to 40,000 people attended last years festival!
Our goal with the Esquimalt Ribfest was simple. Use any proceeds of the festival to help with the start-up of the Esquimalt High School ‘Sea Wolves’ Rugby Academy. Today the Academy is up and running with 30 students and is already building young people for the future! Mission One Accomplished!
Esquimalt Field of Dreams
Our project is to provide Esquimalt with an all-weather playing field. Esquimalt is the only core Municipality without an all-weather playing surface or turf field. Our kids have to leave the community for outdoor field activities for as long as three or four months every year as our Municipal fields close.
Enter the Esquimalt Field of Dreams at Esquimalt High School.
This project is big! It starts with resurfacing the 45-year-old track (thanks EHS classes of 1969, 70 and 71 for the legacy), installing a synthetic, state-of-the-art turf field great for soccer, field lacrosse, rugby and general purpose use.
- lights for year round use
- grandstand for large events
- field house for change rooms, washrooms and meeting area
This overall project will be in the realm of $6M, a lofty undertaking completed in stages as funds allow.
Dream with us, enjoy the Esquimalt Ribfest and stay tuned for project updates.
